Handera

Handera is an engineering company, based in Iowa, USA. Their stated focus is on “engineering services, product development, and ODM Products with a particular focus on portable electronic devices and aggressive design schedules”.

From 1999 to 2003 Handera was a Palm OS licensee, and during this time released two devices running Palm OS.

In late 1999 they released the TRGpro. The name originates from the previous company name, the Technology Resource Group. This device featured CF card slot for expansion, and a speaker for WAV audio playback.

The second model was the Handera 330, released in early 2001. A third device featuring a colour screen, the Handera 330c, was developed and close to production, but was never officially released (1), (2).

Handera was one of the early innovators for the Palm Platform. Among their contributions to the platform were:

  • memory expansion - CF slot on TRGpro;
  • high resolution screens - QVGA screen on Handera 330;
  • dual expansion slots - CF and SD slots on Handera 330;
  • wireless connectivity - w-fi CF card option for TRGpro and Handera 330; bluetooth CF card option for Handera 330;
  • virtual graffiti area on Handera 330;
  • power options - rechargable li-ion pack, rechargable or alkaline AA batteries on Handera 330;
  • built-in speaker on Handera 330.

As an ODM, Handera is known to have collaborated with other Palm OS licensees, and were involved in the development of the AlphaSmart Dana (1), (2) and some Palm OS devices by Samsung (1), (2).
